I’m Building a Cathedral!

Last month I read a fantastic business book, Start with Why, by Simon Sinek.

It’s a great piece that works you through discovering and illustrating the purposes behind your business.  Not what you do or how you do it, but why you do what you do.

The best illustration in the book exposes a juxtaposition between two different work ethics:

Consider the story of two stonemasons.  You walk up to the first stonemason and ask, “Do you like your job?”  He looks up at you and replies, “I’ve been building this wall for as long as I can remember.  The work is monotonous.  I work in the scorching hot sun all day.  The stones are heavy and lifting them day after day can be backbreaking.  I’m not even sure if this project will be completed in my lifetime.  But it’s a job.  It pays the bills.”  You thank him for his time and walk on.

About thirty feet away you walk up to a second stonemason.  You ask him the same question, “Do you like your job?”  He looks up and replies, “I love my job.  I’m building a cathedral.  Sure, I’ve been working on this wall for as long as I can remember and yes, the work is sometimes monotonous.  I work in the scorching hot sun all day.  The stones are heavy and lifting them day after day can be backbreaking.  I’m not even sure if this project will be completed in my lifetime.  But I’m building a cathedral.” 1 [Read more...]

Worry

This past weekend brought a lot of ups and downs for me.  One of the biggest ups was the Race for the Cure on Sunday morning.  Unfortunately I had to miss church for the race, but it was still incredible to see such an outpouring of support for such a worthy cause.  That, and I got in an awesome morning workout!  The other big up for the weekend was WordCamp Portland – the annual WordPress conference for the region (and the third I’ve been able to attend).

It was, on the other hand, also my biggest down. [Read more...]

Motivation

Once upon a time, I heard myself utter the phrase, “I’m not paid enough to care about that.”  Years later, a boss explicitly told me not to do something because, “you aren’t paid enough for that.”  The other day, I was told to excuse a volunteer’s lack of enthusiasm and follow-through because, “he’s doing this for free, anyway.”  All of this reminded me of a particular fact: you have to be motivated to work. What Bought You to Slavery?

Word of advice: Never borrow money to purchase a consumable item.

Debt can essentially be lumped into two categories – rented debt and slave debt.  Rented debt is what you incur when you borrow money to purchase a lasting good.  When you borrow money for a house or a car.  What you’re really doing is convincing someone that has money to purchase the item and rent it to you.  If at any time you can’t pay this rent, they take the item back and either sell it or rent it to someone else.  You’ll also be far less likely to convince someone else to enter that kind of agreement in the future. Work Ethic

On Monday I talked about last weekend’s bridge project from the context of communications within the workplace.  But that illustration is so rich I just can’t leave it alone.  Working on any project with multiple people and personalities will almost always lead to a self-lesson on work ethic.  Last weekend was no different.
